FÖRÄNDRING- IKEA'S APPLAUD WORTHY INNOVATIVE HOMEWARE COLLECTION IS MADE TO FIGHT POLLUTION

My Home

Take a sneak peek at the soon to be available homeware collection made from Rice Straw

We are no strangers to IKEA’s sustainability endeavours as the furniture mogul has always wowed us with its path-breaking innovative solutions. Its latest homeware collection FÖRÄNDRING proves yet again that this gentle giant is true to its core i.e. creating a better everyday life for many people.

Aptly named FÖRÄNDRING which means 'change' in Swedish, the collection theme was unveiled at the Democratic Design Days, IKEA's annual conference at the company's headquarters in Älmhult, Sweden and is a part of its ‘Better Air Now’ initiative that was started in 2018 which aims to turn rice straw (a harvesting residue that aggravates pollution and smog) into a new renewable material source combatting the pollution that it may have yielded otherwise.

The collection that features beautiful lampshades, vessels, and mats boast of using a variety of techniques that revolve around using leftover rice straw, in the words of Lina Vuorivirta, an Ikea designer, “FÖRÄNDRING is a collection in the shades of black and blue. It illustrates the present situation with smog and air pollution, and the hopes for a more optimistic future with crisp and clear blue sky.”

Contrary to a popular thought, just because something is eco-friendly, doesn’t mean that it must compromise on style, appealing to your fine sense of design, this collection can be a delightful addition to your eco-friendly home décor. Lampshades and vessels are made from a mix of rice straw and fabric waste, which are then moulded and dip dyed by hand, and others are the mats and rugs which are woven into cords. The mats come in sizes of three and as Akanksha Deo, an Indian designer with Ikea puts it, does not just aim at a different visual expression but also experiments with different constructions and structures. The whole idea of this collection is to emphasise that each piece like a beautiful piece of art has an individualistic and unique appeal almost as if impersonating the artisan himself.
