WEEKEND READ | LET THESE ICONIC WOMEN CHARACTERS BE YOUR STYLE MUSE

My Style

Do you find these characters extremely relatable? Well, they have some styling tips for you!

Ever watched a TV show and thought of a character as, "dang! I’m exactly like that"? Or have people come up to you saying that you remind them of someone from a web series they’re binging on? Well, if that has happened to you too, you should know that these characters are written very thoroughly by the writers, exploring what they look like, perceive like, and of course, dress like. This description is then sent to the costume department, a group of well-versed stylists, who discuss and decide what the character’s wardrobe would be. If you are confused about discovering your style or want to give a shot at exploring your dressing sense, taking a cue from 'reel' characters may help. Which is why we bring five distinct personalities from the best of TV shows to guide you to your individual style, because if you could find yourselves in these characters, you just might find your personal style too. To get you started, we’ve also picked some of the best pieces to shop.

Head onto your personal style journey now!

Jessica Day - New Girl

Quirky, fun and sweet, Jess is a 31-year-old school teacher. We see her journey where she moves in with three guys in a warehouse apartment after breaking up with her long-term boyfriend trying to make a new life for herself. Although at core an optimistic, Jess is not afraid to be herself, even if it makes her stand out from the conventional crowd. Jess’s positivity reflects well in her choice of bright colours and her modesty, through the huge array of tulip midi-skirts and dresses. A sometimes clumsy person she avoids high heels and usually dons herself in kitten heels of flat ballerinas. If you’re someone who relates to the hopeful honesty in Jess you could try minimalistic silhouettes with bright elements.

Eleanor Shellstrop – The Good Place

Set in a place, where people end up after they die, the Good Place is a comedy series about exploring human ethics, and then in the midst of the ethical chaos is Eleanor, a character who is conflicted between good and bad. Having said that Eleanor is a straight-up badass, charismatic, and sarcastically funny. She also has a rather negligee attitude and doesn’t stress over much things in life. Her dressing reflects the same, she looks effortlessly good, in neutral but well-fitting attires, like sweatshirts, denim jackets, plaid shirts, and of course, classic blue jeans.

Jessica Jones - Jessica Jones

Based in the marvel universe, Jessica Jones has superhuman abilities and does stuff like finding a mortal enemy and being a vigilante. But when seen on more human values, Jessica is a supremely intelligent person who doesn’t depend on anyone and likes to work alone. She is determined towards her goals and will achieve them no matter what. She has a strong, sometimes rough, vibe about her which is evident in her fashion choices - like black being her soul colour. Her wardrobe is full of boyfriend denim, black boots, leather jackets, turtlenecks, grey scarves, and of course, chic aviators.

Miriam “Midge” Maisel - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Midge Maisel is one of those very rare characters you see getting portrayed on screen: feminine, witty and perfectionist, Midge’s life seems to fall apart when her husband leaves her, but she finds herself attracted to stand-up comedy and works towards making a career out of it. Midge is a person with the best of fashion sense, who keeps her weight and health in check, and has the most sorted wardrobe. Though the show is based in the late 50s, if you really relate to the intellectual sophisticated Miriam you can draw inspiration from her style - body-con outfits, dressing with similar tones, the perfect hair, special outfits picked for special nights, and some special love for pearls.

Fleabag

How could we not talk about the phenomenal show that won 6 Emmy’s this year? The writer-actor of the show purposely chose not to name the protagonist so that the title is emphasized even more. The character is drawn from women in society thought of as unlikable, because of their impulsively, non-serious, and messy behaviour. Fleabag is someone who is astonishingly self-aware of herself and even if struggling in her personal or love life, is always primly dressed in chic trench coats and red wine lipstick defining her strength to keep it all together even in the worst times. Fleabag’s attire is as Parisian as it can get, with the chicest outfits like the iconic black jumpsuit!
