REMINISCING THE EPOCH OF KARL LAGERFELD

Fashion

An ode to the man who kept up the legacy of the interlocked “CC”

“The world will now be a less stylish place”, so read a comment among many others echoing a similar sentiment on Chanel’s Instagram post announcing the demise of its Creative Director. Karl Lagerfeld was indeed an irreplaceable legend who made a most spectacular dent in the universe of fashion. A decade after Coco Chanel’s death, when her once revolutionary fashion house was stagnating into something old and uninventive, he stepped in and got it back to its original stature of being a symbol of elegant modernity. While he kept reproducing classic pieces like the LBD, tweed jackets, pearl strings, the 2.55 flap bag and bicolour ballet flats, he also re-invented the label’s design philosophies to march with, if not ahead of, the times. In his own words, “My job is not to do what she did, but what she would have done.” Let’s look at some of the most iconic pieces from the legacy that the legendary designer has left behind.

If it weren’t for Karl Lagerfeld, we wouldn’t recognize Chanel the way we do today – he revived the iconic monogram and put it ostentatiously on bags, jewelry, and even in unexpected places like surfboards, making it a status symbol to be shown off.

Lagerfeld furthered Coco’s love of gold accents and black pearls through elaborate jewelry that instantly became a hit in fashionable circles.

Among his recent offerings: Chanel Spring 2019 collection

Karl Lagerfeld’s extravagant runways were always a talk of the town – and the one showcasing this spring’s collection is sure to remain one of the most memorable ones. It mimicked the beach with models walking barefoot in gorgeous Provençal straw hats. Highlights of the collection, besides the hats, were cycling shorts, an oversize pink tweed blazer and a PVC skirt suit among others.

“Vanity is the healthiest thing in life”, he said.

So celebrate Karl, celebrate elegance – and remember that life deserves to be adorned with fine silks, dried flowers, embroidered tweeds, ostentatious feathers and delicate laces – just what Chanel’s latest couture spring collection offers.
